How to make random teams

  1. Add the names. Paste everyone who is playing or working together, one per line.
  2. Choose the split. Pick a number of teams, or the most people a team may have.
  3. Press Make teams. Not happy? Press it again for a new random split. Copy teams puts the result on your clipboard.

Names are shuffled and then dealt out one at a time, like cards, so teams are never more than one person apart in size. 10 people in 3 teams gives teams of 4, 3 and 3.

Good uses for random teams

Random teams are fair, not balanced by skill. If skill matters, split the strongest players first with one draw, then the rest with a second.

Questions and answers

How are the teams made?

The names are shuffled with your browser's cryptographic random numbers and then dealt out one by one, like cards, so team sizes never differ by more than one person.

What if the names do not divide evenly?

Some teams get one extra person. For example 10 people in 3 teams gives teams of 4, 3 and 3.

What is the difference between number of teams and people per team?

Number of teams makes exactly that many teams. People per team makes as few teams as possible with no team larger than the size you set, so 10 people with up to 4 per team gives teams of 4, 3 and 3.

Can I make new teams if I do not like the result?

Yes. Press Make teams again for a fresh random split. Each split is independent of the last one.

Can I copy the teams?

Yes. Press Copy teams to copy every team as plain text, ready to paste into a chat, an email or a slide.
